Last Day in Sri Lanka

I really enjoyed my stay but I doubt I will ever come back. The country is lush with majestic mountains in the center and sandy beaches along the coasts. The local people are friendly and eager to help.

Its tourism industry has just begun with the end of the Civil War only 2 years ago. Coming here my mom asked “is it safe?” To that I answer YES as safe as Thailand or New York or Toronto. The problem is the industry is trying to suck as much money as possible from the tourists. For example the first hotel I stayed at was $30US per night. For boiled water to drink $5 a day. Wifi was $15 a day. New sheets on the bed was $10 a change. A new clean towel was $5. To make a local call was $15. To use the old computer was $5 an hour. I swear they are trying to figure out how to charge for the air I breathed.

Suntan lotion starts at $15 us then you my haggle them down to $6. Or go to the supermarket and get it there. The beach is 5 minute walk but thousands will ask “taxi to beach?”

The second reason is the island is small if you are a traveller meaning you go from place to place often. It is great for two weeks but no longer. If you wish just to sit on a beach than Thailand or the Philippines has better beaches and better prices.

Finally, and this maybe just the time of year or the place, but a majority of the tourists are older (60+) Europeans who generally stick to their nationalities. I came alone so this bothered me.

I had a great time but I have seen as much as I could see.
