Last night I had a great dinner with Jack Zhang Yi and his boyfriend (whose name I forget) at a hot pot restaurant around here in Taipo.
I met Jack a few months ago on Grindr, an iPhone app to meet other gay men. He is studying linguistics at Hong Kong Institute of Education in Taipo. He lives a 5 minute walk from my home. We have a lot in common since we both are essentially teachers. The first time we met we talked for about 6 hours about life and such. His English is really good and I can talk at my normal speed. He is originally from the most western province of China called Xinjiang. He has been here for about two years and he met his boyfriend here as well. They have been together for a year and a half and they travel together. His boyfriend is a secondary math and science teacher in Oh Man Shan here in Hong Kong. He is a local and lives a bit north of me in Fanling. He is also really nice. They both are not in the gay bar scene. They seem really nice together and it is great to hang out with them.
Last night we met for dinner at 5 pm and then walked around the Taipo Waterside Park until I got home at 10 pm. We talked about teaching, traveling, living in HK, being gay in HK, trying to balance the demands of: work, like, family, happiness and peace. It was a good talk but I feel like I talked a bit too much. It was a great night to be with great people.
