I think the thing that upsets me most in Korea is the move to gay rights. The move to gay rights in Korea goes like this: learn as much English as possible to leave the country and find a gay life in Australia, Canada, or the United States (San Francisco, New York City, Boston, Fire Island, Providence and other gay areas).
It angers me because Koreans are not willing to fight for it, sacrifice for it and demand it. They just want to get out of this country, as soon as possible. It bothers me that they don’t understand the sacrifices that have been made to get these rights in these countries.. They don’t want to change their country. They want to seek the easy way out.
If they changed their country then it would be better for everyone even those who can’t afford to flee. Yes it is hard to fight but it is better for everyone involved. One doesn’t have to fight on the main streets of the city, they can fight by writing to their local representatives, they can encourage those who are gay and in positions of power to fight for the rights of everyone. They can make the consumer companies understand that gays have good buying power which is good for the bottom line (money).
I don’t understand the need to take the easy way out to find paradise rather than make paradise here in Korea. It is hard but it can be done.
