Christmas Assembly And A Touch of Chaos

The Christmas assemblies

Today was our school’s Christmas Assembly. They had asked me to dress up like Santa Claus. I said no. The reason was more because I didn’t want to blur the line between me as a teacher and me as someone to “play” with. I wanted to maintain some level of respect. I was asked to sing a few Christmas songs and hand out some candy after the assembly.

The first assembly was for the Grades 1 to 3. There were tones of cute songs and such. They did play with the birth of Jesus.  On group did Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer. A few sung a lot of the carols in Cantonese. It was pretty good. I laughed a lot and really enjoyed myself. All the time I was kind of thinking how lucky I was to teach at this school and how I truly enjoy being here. I am so lucky.

The second assembly was for the Grades 4 to 6. Again there were some Christmas songs but mostly done on the recorder. The only thing I could think of was the South Park episode where they go to South America and play on the recorders. There was a guy who did some moves on a yo-yo, all I could think about the Simpsons episode. There were a few dances to Korean Pop songs “Nobody” from the Wondergirls.

The end of the day was where the chaos was. I was given a bag of candy and asked to hand it out to the kids. I was swarmed by almost every single kid in the school came at me. It was chaos. I finally told them to go back to their classes and I would come around and do it that way. It was a lot better.

I am done teaching for the year, but still have a parent-teacher day on Sunday.
